The IJN Naval Ensign has been difficult to research. We have used photos and measurements of existing WWII flags, but they all seem to defy the standards and are slightly odd with very slightly different proportions. A Japanese signal manual mentions ensigns only briefly, saying that a “Size 4 = Battleships and above, Size 2 = Destroyers and below.” If only the manual mentioned the dimensions!
Our one flag (so far) is based on an actual flag that measures 75 x 107cm. (29.5 x 42 inches). We also have photos of larger sizes but are trying to track down the details of the Size system. Presumably there was a #1 and #3 at least!
Many countries in WWII used flags with a 1-inch+/- white hem on the hoist side. The hem held brass grommets in the top and bottom corners (and for larger flags, one or more in the center). Snap-clips of one design or another were used to attach the halyard to the grommets.
IJN flags didn't use a hem and grommets. Instead, the IJN flags had beckets (loops of rope) sewn to the hoist corners, reinforced with a leather triangle. The halyard was attached with either knots or a wooden T toggle. Some large flags had a very thin hem, with a rolled rope reinforcing the whole hoist edge. The rope ended in beckets. Very Age of Sail, but effective!
Because of the different IJN hem, you may want to cut your flag right to the hoist edge and not leave any white space.
