FABRIC FLAGS - Japan
Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) Naval Ensign 1889-1945 (War Flag)
IJN flags used beckets or loops of rope sewn to the hoist corners, reinforced with a leather triangle. The flag was attached to the halyard with knots or a wooden T-shaped toggle. Some large flags had a very thin hem with a rolled rope reinforcing the hoist edge, ending in beckets. Very Age of Sail, but effective!
